Chris Barnsdale is a sports medicine doctor and author based in Alberta, Canada. Originally from England and raised on a busy dairy farm, Chris has a penchant for working hard and fixing machines. His slightly deficient brain makes him a very slow reader and causes difficulty when it comes to linear thoughts and writing words on a page.
Despite this challenge, he did well at school and started his medical education with research at Cambridge University. He flirted with surgical training, then became a GP (general practitioner), worked the ER, and finally settled in sports medicine. By focusing on understanding medical concepts rather than simply memorizing things, he has developed a unique perspective on how our bodies work and answered a lot of the questions that puzzled him and his colleagues. This book was decades in the making, as Chris sought to answer simple but tricky questions about injury, pain, healing, and body principles, and present them in a way that is easy to understand for everybody with a body.
In our connected world it's hard to know who to listen to. I find it useful to always ask someone two questions before deciding if I should take their advice:
"Who are you, and why should I listen to you?"
I would be a hypocrite to not answer these questions myself.
Who am I?
For a start, I own an aging human machine. I have been through some "stuff" with my own body and mostly come out the other side. I have helped thousands and thousands of people deal with their "stuff" too. In fact, it is my job to work out what is going wrong with people's bodies every day. I have been around a while now so I have a lot of experience. If you find yourself giving the same advice to people thousands of times and they find it useful, you can probably call yourself an expert.
Why should you listen to me?
My patients tell me every day that they like the way I think about and explain their problems to them. Even better, they like the plans we come up with to help them. My patients encouraged me to write this book.
I am a medical doctor with a broad educational background. As you have already read, I like to think and I am always looking for the truth. Listen to me if you want to hear my opinion on how to make the most of what you have got.
